A walking holiday in Tenerife

To the Guanche people, Tenerife’s earliest inhabitants, El Teide was a sacred place, where the Earth held up the sky and where the demon Guayote lived, spewing forth fire when he was angry. Spain’s highest peak and the third largest volcano on the planet, Teide rises 3,718 metres above sea level from the floor of a crater 17 kilometres wide in which ‘rivers’ of russet and ochre flow between volcanic cones flanked by black obsidian rocks beneath an impossibly blue sky. It’s a landscape beyond imagination.
Beginning in a lovely rural hotel in a traditional hill town on the southern slopes, this holiday journeys upwards through starkly contrasting landscapes. From the cactus terraces of the south, paths traverse fragrant pine forests to a charming alpine spa village and elegant, boutique spa hotel before taking you on your final push to reach Teide National Park, home of the mighty volcano. In this extraordinary setting, from the comfort of Las Cañadas Parador, you explore the surreal landscape of Teide National Park with its myriad trails, including the option to take your journey to its ultimate high (weather permitting) by travelling to the very peak of Mount Teide, the top of Spain, from where an entire archipelago spreads at your feet.

Itinerary

  • Arrival in San Miguel
    Night 1: at Hotel Rural San Miguel (the first of two nights here).
    As your first night's accommodation is on the day of travel, Day 1 is your first day of walking.
  • Circular walk from San Miguel: 11km, 4hrs
    From your base in one of the oldest settlements in the south of Tenerife, whose old quarter includes several good restaurants and a small museum, we suggest a circular walk that takes you along an old merchants’ trail which was used by agricultural workers and their camels en route to the fields to plough, sow and harvest and to trade their goods with neighbours. The path traverses the flank of the mighty Roque de Jama and returns along another ancient trail which was once used for carrying the dead down to San Miguel for burial.

  • San Miguel to Vilaflor: 9km, 4hrs
    Leaving San Miguel, you ascend steadily above the village into its agricultural heartland alongside cultivated terraces on paths lined with prickly pear, the presence of pine trees and green hills becoming ever more prevalent as you progress towards the forest crown that circles the heart of the island. In mid to late January and early February you'll find the way lined with pink almond blossom as you enter the pretty mountain village of Vilaflor. A final short climb above the village takes you to the splendid Hotel Spa Villalba, your base for the next three nights.

  • Choice of walks from Vilaflor: 11km to 14.5km
    From your pine-scented base, we suggest two routes to make the most of your days here and still leave you time to enjoy the hotel's facilities.

    Paisaje Lunar: 14.5km, 6hrs
    Head along the ancient 'Camino de Chasna' trail which was the main route connecting the spa town of Vilaflor with Mount Teide and was used extensively by explorers, scientists and well-heeled Victorians over-wintering on Tenerife on the advice of their physicians. Climbing above the village, you ascend to the surreal rock formations of Paisaje Lunar (lunar landscape) where, over half a million years, the elements have sculpted fantastical shapes from volcanic fallout to create a unique and fascinating landscape.

    Vilaflor Wine Route: 14km, 6hrs; shorter option: 11km, 5hrs
    This second option combines pleasant woodland walking with an opportunity to try some of the Hotel Villalba's award-winning wines. Trails through the pine forest lead to Vilaflor's wine country, where you traverse country lanes lined with vineyards and, in early spring, almond blossom.The full route brings you to the Bodega Reverón, where you can take a tour before trying a selection of wines which are also available to buy.

  • Vilaflor to Teide National Park: 16km, 7hrs
    A challenging ascent of over 1,000 metres awaits. You head through the forest above Vilaflor and alongside the abyssal ravine of Barranco del Cuervo before rising steeply, sometimes out of the cloud, to emerge at the lovely picnic zone of Las Lajas, hopefully beneath a brilliant blue sky with the peaks of El Sombrero and El Sombrito on the horizon. Your ascent then continues to reach the crater wall where the magnificent panorama of Mount Teide and the Las Cañadas crater opens up before you. After traversing the crater ridge with El Teide on one side and a sea of clouds, or views down to the south coast, on the other, a final descent takes you to Las Cañadas Parador.

  • Circular walk to El Teide via cable car: 14km, 4.5hrs (plus detours to viewpoints)
    Having journeyed to this, the very heart of Tenerife, we suggest that, weather permitting, you take your journey to its ultimate high by following a level route through the kaleidoscopic landscape of the Teide National Park to reach the cable car (pay locally) which will take you to within 200 metres of the very peak of the volcano. From the upper cable car station paths lead off to the north with views over the remaining north crater wall of Fortaleza and Montaña Blanca from where those wishing to climb to the peak from 'base' level begin their ascent. To the south, the path leads to the perfect crater of Pico Viejo, the lower of the two volcanic peaks, from where you can see the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro on the horizon, as well as the southern coast of the island.

    If you wish to go to the summit of El Teide, you will need to obtain a free permit, available online in advance of your trip. Permits become available six months in advance, and are very popular, so we recommend reserving yours as soon as possible. The ascent to the peak takes an additional hour due to the altitude, which makes progress slow. (NB: In the event of heavy snowfall, which is not uncommon between November and February, the summit path will be closed, although the cable car may continue to run. The latter, however, does not operate in high winds, in which case it is impossible to access the peak.)

    In the event of bad weather, and as an alternative, we offer two additional routes within Teide National Park.

    Out-and-back walk to Mount Guajara: 10km, 4.5hrs
    This challenging option leads from the Parador to the peak of Mount Guajara, the highest point of the remaining crater wall and site of the world's first high-mountain observatory, and returns along the same route.

    Circular walk via Roques de García: 4.5km, 1.5hrs
    This is a short but unforgettable walk past the various weird and wonderful rock formations of the Roques de García, including the shillelagh-shaped Roque Chinchado which used to grace the 1,000-peseta banknote. Many of these striking natural monuments resemble fingers pointing into the sky, and another looks like a cathedral, with several tower-like formations.

    As usual, an outstanding holiday from Inntravel. We enjoyed the the transition from the lowlands to the striking volcanic landscapes of Teide National park. We particularly liked the walk from Vilaflor to the Parador albeit being the most strenuous walk of the week.

    An excellent walking holiday, with beautiful weather throughout, well planned by Inntravel as usual. Good variety of hotels but each was memorable in its own way. Half board food was of good quality. Night time star gazing was stunning. Day 5 of the walking is more challenging [as we expected], need to leave promptly in the morning especially in winter months as does take a full day to complete. GPS is a really good tool for using on the routes [download each day's routes at home before you leave]

    What a wonderful trip. A blend of great hotels, food plus the "just challenging enough" walks in mind-blowing  volcanic landscapes. The Mount Teide National Park is a sight not to be missed! One of our most memorable trips of all time.

    Excellent trip. The walking is hard in as much as every day it's mostly up hill. There is also quite a monotony of uphill in pine forest with no understory vegetation. It's fine but maybe it should be a pointed out more clearly in the notes. The hotels are all lovely and well staffed.

    The weather was a surprise - at the two hotels at lower levels, particularly at the Villalba, the cloud rolled in every day around midday, making the visibility on the walks a little disappointing. However, we were above the cloud on Mount Teide and stayed in the sunshine for two days, getting sunburnt in the process! We wish we had spent extra time at the Parador as the landscape was so extraordinary and it would have been good to have explored it further, rather than only having one day's walk there. Overall, it was a great way to explore another side to Tenerife and to see how the countryside changed, from cacti and potato terraces lower down, to being in the cloud forest further up and then the volcanic barren beautiful landscape up above.

    As always a fantastic Inntravel walking holiday with many highlights! Definitely a grade 2/3 walking holiday with some steep climbs which you state in notes but people need to be aware. Fantastic scenery especially the last three days and around Teide and the Parador. The obvious highlight was climbing to the top of Mt Teide. We managed to coordinate cable car tickets and permits booking both well in advance (necessary and recommended to do). Despite all the walking, we managed to gain weight - a sign of the good food (and drink).

    This was a fabulous winter break, very well planned and organized by Inntravel. We were lucky to have sunny weather everyday, although the evenings were chilly enough to need a warm sweater.

    The first day’s walk around San Miguel was a good opportunity to stretch our legs after a day of travel, but it wasn’t an area that we would feel inclined to visit again. Unquestionably, the highlight of the week for us was the walk on Day 5 from the hotel at Vilaflor up to the Parador del Teide. The first sighting of Mt Teide from the crater rim was absolutely breathtaking and arriving at our room with its close-up view of the volcano followed by a cold beer in the bar was a well-deserved reward for our full and challenging day of walking. We found that although we walked a little faster than the Inntravel guidance, the breaks for our picnic together with many stops to admire the views and take photos meant that in total we took longer than the 6 hour estimate.

    For our final day of walking, we had booked the permit to access the peak of Mt Teide about 3 months in advance and were happy with the time-slot that we chose (1pm-3pm). This allowed us to enjoy a leisurely breakfast soaking up the view from the Parador, confident that we would still have enough time to walk to the cable car. We booked the cable car tickets about a month in advance for 12:30pm and were very happy that we didn’t risk waiting to buy them on the day (the tickets are refundable if the service is cancelled due to bad weather). Even in January, it was extremely busy at the base station of the cable car (and around the Parador itself), but for the short yet challenging ascent to the peak it was very quiet and peaceful as visitor numbers are strictly limited.

    We were very happy with the plentiful food and comfortable accommodation on this holiday and are already planning our next Inntravel trip.

    Walking was great. Future travellers may wish to note that is can be very busy around the parador during the day. Option B walk to Alto de Guajara is a wonderful alternative to escape the crowds. This is a most enjoyable and quite challenging walk and while only 10 KM feels like a longer hike. There was still snow and ice in places and perhaps future travellers may wish to be made aware that this is likely on north facing slopes. Option C is a perfect morning walk if departure permits. The variety of hikes and differing terrains was super and the hospitality in all hotels was warm and welcoming.

    Another fabulous holiday meticulously organised by Inntravel. We love the 'journey' offered by hotel-to-hotel walking holidays, and the destination of this one is quite something! We had perfect weather for walking in mid-January and only really needed cold-weather gear on the last couple of days. We would recommend the use of Inntravel's excellent walking notes AND their GPX files. This belt and braces approach kept us on track... most of the time!

    This was an excellent trip. The walking was fabulous and the places to stay really good. This is Tenerife for those that want to explore the volanic landscapes and is peaceful, alien and spectacular. We really enjoyed it.

    The holiday was fantastic. The walk to Teide is very challenging but the first views at the crater edge are truly spectacular. It took us nine hours to complete, but we're both in our late 60's and felt very proud of ourselves for completing it. It was a wonderful experience to share with each other. We will definitely be booking another Inntravel walking holiday.

    Another excellent Inntravel itenerary. Our fourth trip with Inntravel and the first with provided GPS tracks which were accurate and made navigation very straightforward. We visited in early September and the walks are quite challenging with the combination of heat and altitude but well worth the effort.

     

    A good selection of hotels and we particularly enjoyed the spa at Hotel Villalba.

     

    We did the "VIP ascent to the Peak on foot" with volcanoteide.com which was an excellent way to end the holiday but should only be undertaken if you are confident you can manage the climb, otherwise the cable car is a good option!

It’s entirely up to you whether or not you use them – our detailed, step-by-step route notes remain the principal means of guiding you from A to B – but we provide them as a secondary means of navigation for additional reassurance when walking.
  • We can book a wide range of routes from the UK with a variety of airlines. As well as being more convenient for you to book all elements of your holiday together, it also means that we’ll accept liability for your travel arrangements, so if things go wrong, such as the airline going bust, we’ll make suitable alternative arrangements for you.   • We can’t book flights that originate outside the UK, but if you wanted to book your own flights to London (or elsewhere in the UK), we can make all onward travel arrangements (including flights) from there.   • Since our holidays are self-guided, we recommend calling us for a chat about your plans before making a booking, especially if it’s the first time you’ve booked with us.

  • Once you’ve decided on your exact itinerary (our travel experts will be happy to offer advice), you need to provide us with your party’s details, either by phone or via our booking form. At this point we also ask you to pay a deposit so that we can secure a room for you immediately on confirming availability with the hotel(s).   • Yes, it’s something we insist on, even for holidays in the UK. The vast majority of holidays go smoothly, but when things go wrong, it can be expensive to put them right. Buying a new pair of walking boots after your suitcase is stolen mightn’t seem so bad, but the bill for being airlifted down from a mountain with a broken leg or flown home while still recovering from an illness or accident can incur a five or six-figure bill.

    Many insurers offer travel insurance (you can find details on our insurance page of a policy that you may like to consider if you are a UK resident), but you do need to make sure that you’re covered for medical emergencies – including falling ill with Covid-19 while on holiday – and repatriation. We also recommend that you are covered for other eventualities, such as cancellation and loss of luggage and passports.

    When you purchase a policy, be sure to check that it covers the activities you'll be doing on holiday and that it is adequate for your own individual needs.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure you are in possession of the correct travel documents, with the correct validity. If you’re a UK citizen, you need a full British passport to travel to Spain, but not a visa (please note, however, that a new travel authorisation system is being introduced). If you are a citizen of another country, you’ll need to check requirements with the national embassy or your own consulate.

    Current information regarding vaccinations and travel health advice for UK citizens can be found through the Travel Health Pro website. You must make sure you have adequate insurance cover for illness, accidents and repatriation (see the insurance question). You should also apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) if your EHIC has expired (if you have a still-valid EHIC, you can use this until it expires).
  • (Castilian) Spanish is one of several official languages; Catalan, Basque and Gallego have equal status in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Galicia, respectively. The currency is the Euro. Spanish time is GMT/UTC + 1. It uses Daylight Saving Time, so in summer is on BST + 1.

  • You are the best judge of your child’s/children’s capabilities. We are happy to take bookings for families of older children/teenagers if they walk regularly, love the outdoors and are comfortable with the distances and ascent/descent involved. Please note that the bedrooms at most of the accommodation we use will normally only sleep a maximum of 3 people, and sometimes only 2.
