Palma

Mallorca’s popularity is down to many factors – superlative landscapes ranging from rugged mountains plunging into the deep-blue sea on the north coast, to the central plain and beaches of the south; a benevolent climate, with the water staying warm well into November and almond blossom coating the hills as early as February; tasty cuisine; and wonderfully well-waymarked footpaths which criss-cross the terrain. And the best way to access all this is via the island’s beautiful and fascinating capital.
Palma is home to almost half the population of the island. Bustling streets, colourful markets and a busy harbour contrast nicely with the tranquillity of the central plain, the cliffs and coves of the northern coast, and the mountains of the high sierra. It is an elegant city, with impressive architecture lining winding narrow streets that lead to the central square and cathedral.

  • Notes for a self-guided walking tour included
    There is something very appealing about Palma – it’s a city, though it doesn't feel overwhelming as it is compact enough to explore in a day or two (we provide notes for a self-guided city walking tour to help you make the most of your visit). In recent years, careful restoration work has breathed new life into its traditional quarters and historic buildings, creating a friendly, vibrant city that people enjoy exploring. Remnants of its turbulent past are everywhere, from the ancient Taolitic culture through to conquests by the Romans, Vandals, Moors and Byzantines.

    Seek out these historic treasures and you will come to the 10th-century Arab Baths – all that is left of the Arab city of Medina Mayurqa – which feature a 12-pillared tepidarium and tranquil courtyard gardens, formerly part of a Moorish nobleman’s mansion; and the more obvious Cathedral of Palma, known locally as La Seu, an impressive Gothic building which dominates the city skyline.
  • Eating & shopping
    Palma is not just about the past. The city is also a haven for shoppers, with many stylish shops and boutiques, plus interesting local markets most notably the Llotja del Peix, an early morning fish market on the seafront at Es Moll de Pescadors – a great spectacle even if you are not buying.

    Palma is also a great place to eat out, whether you are looking for simple tapas, a long, lazy fresh seafood lunch or gourmet cuisine at night. As with all our destinations, we recommend sampling the local dishes and specialities at one of the many pavement cafés, such as llom amb col (pork and pine nuts wrapped in cabbage leaves), pan amb oli or amb tomaquet (bread with olive oil or tomato), guisat de peix (fish stew) or caldereta de sambfaina, a tasty lobster casserole; followed by ensaimada, a delicate pastry spiral roll dusted with sugar, and accompanied by a glass of the local cava, a sparkling wine produced by Jaume Mesquida.

    "We thoroughly enjoyed our eight nights at Ca's Curial in Soller and were glad we'd upgraded to this option. The suites are spacious with plenty of room to spread out. We had our own private garden area with table, chairs and sun beds and it felt very secluded. The swimming pool was peaceful and lovely to come back to at the end of a hot walk. Breakfasts were excellent with a good variety of food. The restaurant was only open for dinner three nights a week but there are plenty of lovely places to eat in Soller which is roughly half a mile away. 
     
    The walks were nicely varied and our favourite was Deia to Soller, although we didn't do every walk in the itinerary due to the high temperatures while we were there and adapted some of the walks to make them shorter. 
    Be aware that daytime biting mosquitoes are apparently a bit of a recent problem in Mallorca. We found them particularly bad in the shaded, wooded areas and possibly rainfall in the days prior to our holiday may have made them worse. Normally mosquitoes are most active in the evenings and at night  and we've never been bothered by daytime biting before, so our first walk saw us bitten quite badly around the legs which itched for several days!
     
    We added on three nights in Palma which gave us plenty of time to explore the city. Hotel Almudaina was adequate but wouldn't be our first choice of accommodation, although the location was excellent.
     
    The taxi transfers with Antonio Horrach worked well so we also arranged for him to take us to the airport on departure day. He was incredibly helpful and knew exactly which check-in desk we needed to look for!
     
    We will definitely revisit Soller to finish off the walks we didn't manage to do this time."

    Mallorca did not disappoint. Every walk was more beautiful than the last with the delicious food and wine topping off the end of each rewarding day of hiking. Though the hiking difficulty is rated as a 1-2, I would lean very heavily towards the 2 category as most of the walks were pretty challenging. I highly recommend staying in Palma for a couple of days as well. Lovely city.

    This was our first cycling holiday for about 40 years so wanted something gentle to ease ourselves in! The distances were more than manageable and the route maps so easy to read and understand. The accommodation was all perfect with welcome pools to dip in at the end of the day - the weather was unseasonably hot. Great not to have to look for somewhere to eat each evening and the food although rustic was delicious. Antonio our taxi driver was a font of information and recommended 2 vegetarian restaurants in Palma - La Mujer de Verde & 13% - both were a real find! Will definitely be booking with Inntravel again.

    Definitely need good walking shoes for a lot of the walks as the paths were cobbled & not even. But what a great variety of walks we did - lots of hills climbed & beautiful views.

    Two nearby restaurants to recommend: C'an Toni - long established with a full range of excellent Mallorcan food and Can Frasquet Bistro in Placa del Mercat - modern but excellent Spanish food and friendly staff.
